Bradley Lake Shallows

It's a steep hike up and over a ridge to Bradley Lake at the foot of the Grand Teton. I could be in worse condition but I could certainly be better as well. I decided on taking my heavy camera and some sketching supplies and leaving behind my paint box and its 20# load of pastels. The weather was warm and I was glad for the decision even though the lake was even more beautiful than I had imagined, ringed as it is by 13,000' peaks that still held snow in mid-July. Of all the possibilities for a painting, this is the one that grabbed me the hardest - a shallow bay where untold ages of toppled timber have come to rest. There's a narrow gap leading to the main lake giving some distance perspective. My photos and sketches were enough to bring back all the memories I needed to create this rendition of Bradley Lake Shallows.

Ann and I were visiting Arches National Park, near Moab, Utah, in April 2016, the year of the 100th birthday of the National Park Service. We happened upon this neat view of the moon setting at sunrise near "The Windows." I got a series of photos because I liked the way the brilliant light hit the tops of a few sandstone monoliths. After a year those images were still haunting me so I dug out the shots and came up with this rendition.

The deserts of southwestern U. S. have long been favorite places to visit. The dramatic pillars and cliffs with their cross-bedded sandstone in every shade of red, orange, brown and magenta, rise vertically to staggering heights. Coupled with vast distances that stretch the eye to the blue horizon and endless skies of billowy clouds, this red rock country seems designed with the artist in mind. I'm happy to live in a region where such grand natural wonders are within a couple days' drive. I hope these vistas bring back great memories for others as well.

Desert Design is based on my morning impressions of Arches national park where my wife and I spent part of our 2016 holiday. It reminded me a lot of Monument Valley but easier to get around. Utah has so much stark and stunning scenery. I highly recommend it!

Another scene from our travels in Arches national Park. This time the view is from the Park Avenue turnout looking north. It's one of the more awesome spectacles I've experienced looking down this avenue of vertical monuments in early morning light. I added the rider for a sense of scale and that inspired the name of the painting. It's as though he were the spirit of the visitor gazing in wonder.

Taggart Lake sits on the high moraine at the foot of the Grand Teton in Grand Teton National Park. I've hiked to it numerous times and never found the spot lacking in mood and majesty. Sometimes the peak is wreathed in cloud but on this occasion the late afternoon sunlight was streaming down Garnet Canyon lighting a pathway to the summit.

Taggart Lake in Grand Teton National Park is one of my favorite spots to pause and ponder the majesty of Creation. Late afternoon sun finds its way down the canyons and casts all within them in a golden glow. Taggart is a natural lake formed behind a glacial moraine only a short hike from the park's inner loop road and well worth the modest effort to get to it.

Hill Barn and Hay

Who can resist a weather-beaten old red barn? Back in Pennsylvania Dutch country they were a common sight when I grew up but they're getting harder to find as one by one they fall out of service and into disrepair. Here in the west they never were all that common, paint being a scarce commodity. Most Wyoming barns never had a coat of paint to brag about. So when I came across this gem along a back road near the Montana border, I shot it from every angle. In the studio I made some design decisions like taking out one row of hay bales and neatening up the distant row of trees but I left the barn just as it was. Paintings can be a resource for future historians to know how things looked back in the good old days of the early 21st century.
