Overlooking the harbor and Swim Beach on Monhegan Island, Maine, is the famous Red House, painted and immortalized by Jamie Wyeth. This pastel landscape painting captures it in morning light, looking out towards the Atlantic ocean beyond. The rocky abutment upon which the house sits attests to the violent storms that come from the southwest during hurricane season.

The old stone bridges of my home area in eastern Pennsylvania hold a lot of powerful memories and emotions for me. This particular bridge on Unami Creek near Sumneytown was painted by my mother many years ago and is still one of my favorites of hers. It was great to be able to go back and visit the scene with her some years back and then create this version which is from an unusual angle. It is the same bridge you can also see in Wetzel's Mill in Snow. The trees remind me of exotic dancers. Sycamores always seem vibrant because of their light colored bark and dramatic shapes.

In eastern Pennsylvania, where Gary grew up, water power was once harnessed for the grinding of flour. Many of the old stone grist mills still exist, amazingly, and are picturesque reminders of a simpler life and days gone by. This mill is on Unami Creek, near Sumneytown, Pennsylvania. It is the same bridge you can also see in Island Sycamores.
