South of Carmel, California, at the northern end of Big Sur lies quiet Garrapata State Park, one of my favorite places to paint and play. Tiny Soberanes Creek tumbles out of the Santa Lucia Mountains, through a redwood forest and finally spills into the ocean just below a delicate waterfall. Pictured here looking up the canyon into the light, forms are dissolved by the atmosphere. Claude Monet, the 19th century French Impressionist, said he didn't paint things, he painted the air between himself and things. Hopefully this is a painting he'd respond to. I know I was very proud when a famous contemporary artist wanted this piece for her collection.
