En Plein Air is French for "in open air" and refers to a style of painting where the artist composes and executes a painting outdoors in front of the subject. The plein air work here has spontaneity and vitality but may lack some of the polish a studio piece would have. That isn't necessarily good or bad: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

From Rocky Creek Bridge on the northern end of Big Sur, the incredible section of California coast from San Simeon to Carmel, this scene was begun plein air. It was a trick catching the scene because a bank of fog kept rolling in and covering it up. I finally finished it in the studio but thanks to a good start on location that was easy to do

I'm calling this a plein air piece although technically it isn't. It wasn't painted in the studio either. It was the demo piece I did for a pastel workshop at The Cowboy Carousel Center in November of 2013. The locale is the North Fork of Clear Creek in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming.
Available at a. Banks Gallery, Missoula, MT.
