This is the first in a new series of paintings in a square format that I'm calling, Squaring the West. Yellowstone Canyon is one of my go-to places when I need uplift and inspiration. It never fails to instill me with a sense of profound ecstasy. There is a paved trail from the canyon's north rim to the brink of the falls - the vantage point for this painting. I have also climbed down the steep slope through thick fallen timber almost to the brink on the south side, maybe not such a smart thing to do but good for a jolt of adrenaline!
This piece has been trimmed to a vertical 20 x 16.

Early on a chilly morning in May, Grand Geyser in Yellowstone National Park makes a grand eruption. Super-heated geyser water explodes into the blue morning sky as the steam expands, creating intriguing shadows and depth within the water plume.

The famous Yellowstone River emerges from Yellowstone National Park at the head of Paradise Valley and flows north to Livingston, Montana. Along the way it waters ranchland and supports a great trout fishery. This view is near Chico Hot Springs and Pray, Montana.

Yellowstone River has carved a deep canyon through soft colorful volcanic rock in Yellowstone National Park near Canyon Village. This pastel landscape painting is from the Ribbon Lake trailhead at Artist's Point. It's one of my somewhat experimental paintings in that I've pushed the color to help dramatize the beautiful light that fills the canyon and is reflected from one wall to the other, all disappearing downstream into a blue haze.

In the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming they call these small ravines, "draws." They often hold a row of brush seeking out moisture in the sandy soil at the bottom of the draw.

Sheep Mountain near Jackson Hole, Wyoming is commonly referred to as the Sleeping Indian, named for the unusual shape of the peak which is reminiscent of an Indian chief lying on his back with full war bonnet regalia. perhaps it's a fanciful interpretation but not one without some verisimilitude. This pastel landscape painting attempts to capture the light effect at sunset upon the recumbent chief, viewed across the sagebrush flats lining the Gros Ventre River.

This wintry perspective on western ranch country evolved from my desire to crystallize several different notions into one canvas. It could be in any of the western states but just so happens to have been inspired mostly by scenes from Idaho near the little village of Victor, not far from Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The settling of weather into the distant valley was something I had experienced in that area one May when I was there for a painting and photo outing with a friend. Atmospherics are one of my favorite subjects. The placement of the red barn is for best composition to lead the eye into the scene.
